Jazz Sinfônica

Considered one of the most creative musician of the worldmusic scene, Ray Lema lives in France since the early 1980s.  He just released a re-recording of thirteen of his musics with the Jazz Sinfonica of São Paulo directed by  Maestro João Mauricio Galindo. The result is  a careful  work with a  rare and highly plural quality.

Ray Lema began to study music at the age of eleven, starting with the musics of Bach, Mozart and the composers of the classical european school. He became a  musician and creator who has a large production which always manages to cross  African traditions and the western avant-garde. But it’s only in 2009, that he finally had the opportunity  to join his musical loves for 2 concerts with the jazz Sinfônica of São Paulo.

Invited in Brazil to comemorate the year of France, he played some of his musics with the Jazz Sinfonica of Sao Paulo under the direction of Maestro João Mauricio Galindo. The conductor chose thirteen out of some hundred musics of Ray Lema’s compositions and got them arranged  to become different movements based on the model of the classical symphonies.
It’s the live recordings (CDs and DVDs) of these concerts at the  Ibirapuera Auditorium in Sao Paulo, with Ray Lema on piano that we finally have access. The complicity between the two men and the commitment of all the members of the orchestra give a special meaning to this masterful re-reading of Ray Lema’s pieces, filled with a special emotion.

For Ray Lema,  the experience “has changed his life” as he said on the DVD, in the ‘making of’ shooting. The composer, who sing with his  particular timbre,  discovered  inflections he had never heard before in his own musical compositions. The Maestro and Ray Lema are now working on new creations. An amazing and powerful album ! (Squaaly -Mondomix / RFI)
