Ray Lema loves new and fraternal experiences, playful alliances. We find him here in intimacy with the rhythmic trances of the gnawa musicians from Essaouira. In this album which is mainly mainly around the traditional repertoire, Lema gives more then he composes. He only signed one title, a reggae (Mister X), and gives the leadership to the voice of the  Maalem (master musician leading the Moroccan musicians and singers), Lema intervenes discreetly on instruments (guitar, keyboards, percussions). The bass sound of the guembri (traditional lute-drum), the voice of maâlem and his companions, the frantic gallop of the iron rattlesnakes dominate the whole thing. The touch of Lema in this atmosphere takes an astonishing relief. (Le Monde – august 2000)
